Football is crap! Oh, don't get me wrong, I was and still are a lover of the game, to some extent, but that love has been questioned more and more over the last ten years. I sense that senior footballers are often preoccupied with tattoos, haircuts, diamond studs, expensive cars, girls, money and such like to really take the game seriously enough. Well, would you if you were a millionaire? Being expected to run about in the rain chasing a ball, likely to be hurt, all done in shorts and a t-shirt!
I jest. But I often wonder what goes on in a footballer's head because the way some of them play suggests that their mind is not always on the job.
Do you like football? Do you really look at what the players are doing? Do you think about the way the team is instructed to take corners, free kicks, goal kicks, etc? If you really do think about the game then you, like me, must be highly frustrated. So many opportunities are wasted through basic, schoolboy-like, methods of play. The next time you watch a game count the number of times the ball is kicked in a 'kick & hope' fashion. That is, the ball is lobbed into the air not to anyone in particular. Of that number you get, note how many times that ball went to the opposition. Do the same with corners and goal kicks. It all adds up to giving the ball away when your team had possession and the advantage.
I do question coaches and managers. I once saw a former Premiership side trainng. They were doing leapfrog! 'Former' sums it up.
You could see Liverpool sliding down the table when Rafael Benetiz was in charge just by watching the way the team was playing; so many long cross-balls. Clever but so dangerous (I'l explaiin later). And when in a winning position to replace a striker with a defender is just asking for trouble.
